Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS), the seventh-largest school district in the United States, has long been committed to the safety and well-being of its over 200,000 students.

What struck this principal the most was the seamless response that followed. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office had already been notified by district dispatchers and was en route to the
student’s home by the time she viewed the alert. This immediate action was critical in ensuring the student’s safety.

The intervention that evening made all the difference. The student received the help they needed, including both professional counseling services and continuous support from the school. Over time, the principal noticed significant improvements in the student’s demeanor and engagement with others.

Every time I saw this student, I made sure to tell them how important they are and how much better the world is with them in it. Even on the last day of school, I reminded them of that.
