Schools are facing a mental health crisis. Rates of adolescent anxiety and depression are on the rise. Suicide is now the second-leading cause of death for those ages 13 to 18. These statistics were true in 2019. Today, add the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, civil unrest, and the isolation of recent shelter-in-place orders. Students need mental health support now more than ever.
Gaggle has been partnering with districts by identifying students in crisis to prevent tragedy. Last year alone, Gaggle flagged more than 63,000 student references to self-harm and suicide. Once these students are identified, they need mental health support, but many may not have access to mental health care. With limited access to mental health resources, school staff shortages, and a host of other challenges, it can be challenging for districts to provide students with the support they need.
That’s why Gaggle is launching a new service: Gaggle Therapy.
Gaggle Therapy matches students with counselors licensed in your state to provide secure weekly video sessions. The program is flexible, allowing administrators to access therapists when a student needs them. Gaggle Therapy follows all state and federal laws and is compliant with HIPAA and FERPA. Best of all, there are no out-of-pocket costs for students to participate in the program.
Students who access therapy show a multitude of positive outcomes. When mental health needs are addressed, students can feel more positive and balanced in school and in life. Therapy is also an excellent tool to help students develop interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution and self-management, which can improve classroom relationships and academic performance. Beyond that, students who engage in therapy are less likely to engage in risky behaviors, such as substance misuse, bullying, and self-harm.
Gaggle Therapy can be integrated as another layer for support in your district. Studies show that students who feel heard and supported by educators are more likely to attend school regularly and engage in daily activities.
Students’ routines are being disrupted and they’re experiencing prolonged disconnection from school, their teachers, and their friends. It’s a hard time to be a kid. If your educators aren’t connecting with students, how are they providing extra support to those who need it?
Gaggle is moving beyond identifying students in crisis to addressing the crisis head-on. Regardless of whether your district is back to school full time, participating in hybrid learning, or completely remote this year, your students need help. Gaggle Therapy has a bevy of therapists standing ready to help them.
